Mohamed Fayed quizzed over sex assault

Mohamed Fayed Harrods
Mohamed Fayed
was questioned by police today
over allegations he sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl.

The Harrods owner went to a west London police station this morning
with his lawyers and was questioned under caution, Scotland Yard said.
The alleged victim claimed he had forcibly "French kissed" her at his Knightsbridge store.

It is understood the girl first met the executive while shopping at Harrods with her mother.
It is alleged he asked for her phone number and later invited her back to the shop.
She claims that when she did go back, he committed the assault.
As she left the room they were in he allegedly warned her "not to tell anyone".

A police spokeswoman said the 75-year-old volunteered to speak to officers
and was quizzed under caution. He was not arrested.

Sources said he was quizzed for around an hour accompanied by legal representatives.
The investigation is being run by Operation Sapphire, the Met's sexual crimes unit.
It is believed a number of staff at Harrods have been interviewed.

The teenager made a formal complaint at Notting Hill police station on 30 May.
Mr Fayed's personal spokesman was unavailable for comment and Harrods press office
said it could not comment at this time.

Mr Fayed, born in Alexandria, Egypt, to a poor school teacher father,
moved to Britain in the Seventies but has repeatedly been refused a British passport.
He bought Harrods in 1985 in a £615 million takeover, and is also owner of Fulham football club.
